Data Governance for Social Robots: How to Design the Informed Consent in HRI from a Regulatory Perspective

Speaker: Dr. Yueh-Hsuan Weng (Assistant Professor, Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences (FRIS), Tohoku University, Japan)

Abstract: In recent years, many countries experiencing the problem of ‘super aging’ have considered using socially assistive robots to reduce their labor shortages in the field of elderly healthcare. When these social robots enter human living spaces, their sensors allow them to capture huge amounts of personal data from the real world. Although this means that they are more effective, it brings with it a number of data privacy concerns. In this Law Tech Talk, Dr. Yueh-Hsuan Weng will focus on the issue of informed consent in human-robot interaction (HRI) and introduce a design-centered approach for data governance of social robots.

About the speaker: Yueh-Hsuan Weng is an Assistant Professor at the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences (FRIS), Tohoku University, Japan, a Visiting Scientist at RIKEN-AIP, and a TTLF Fellow at Stanford Law School. He received his Ph.D. in Law from Peking University and his M.S. in Computer Science from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He is strongly interested in interdisciplinary studies, especially in issues concerning the interface between Artificial Intelligence and Law, including Robot Law, Social Robotics, and Legal Informatics. During his Ph.D. studies, he has founded ROBOLAW.ASIA and CHINA-LII, which are China’s first initiatives in AI Law and Free Access to Law.
